One of estrogen's most important roles in the female body is to work in tandem with another hormone, progesterone, to help regulate the menstrual cycle. During the first few days of the cycle, estrogen is produced in the ovarian follicle and secreted into the bloodstream. It travels to the pituitary gland, where it relays the message that it is time to prepare for ovulation. Because of this, the ovaries stimulate production of another hormone, luteinizing hormone (LH), which helps to release the egg. If the egg is not fertilized, estrogen and progesterone levels drop and menstruation occurs.
